Adam’s mom, Judy, is a rockstar of Christmas, and The Drink is her stage. Each year, she travels up from Baltimore with a car full of homemade cookies to lead a motley crew of jews, atheists, muslims — and the occasional believer — in classic Christmas carols from our piano.

Add in our vintage Christmas tree and decorations, hot wassail, our family egg nog recipe, the fireplace in the backroom, and a bottle of whiskey shared with strangers, and you have a recipe for just about the best Christmas event in Brooklyn. Come join us.

We are turning 4! And yet again, celebrating our birth with weirdest of weird holidays, Krampus. Nothing says bar anniversary party like German, Anti-Santa goat demon that shakes chains at small children.

“Krampus is a beast-like creature from the folklore of Alpine countries thought to punish children during the Yule season who had misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards well-behaved ones with gifts. Krampus is said to capture particularly naughty children in his sack and carry them away to his lair.”

Holiday miracle, Krampus falls near the anniversary of opening, so every year we eat Germanic food, drink German beer, listen to metal, and dress up as Christmas demons, horns and all, to celebrate the fact that we exist. We like to imagine that our bar is Krampus’s lair.

This year we’ll be joined by the incredible occult witch metal of Serpentskirt. They say:

We came together under a super moon. For inspiration we listen to the Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Babes in Toyland, Black Tambourine, The Cure, Siousxie and the Banshees, Le Tigre, Chelsea Wolf and more. We read tarot cards and write spells into our songs. We are not afraid to get fast and LOUD. We are not afraid of anything.

Opening for them is the pyschadelic freak out terror jazz of 2001: A Bass Odyssey, a solo dude playing double bass (electric and upright).

We’re turning 3, and as usual, are celebrating with the best weird German holiday we know: Krampus.

WHY IS ETHIOPIAN CALENDER DIFFERENT FROM GREGORIAN???
The current year according to the Ethiopian calendar is 2006, which WILL begin on September 11, 2012 AD of the Gregorian calendar. A SEVEN- TO EIGHT-YEAR GAP between the Ethiopian and Gregorian calendars results from an alternate calculation in determining the date of the Annunciation (the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God ) of Jesus.

ANCIENT ETHIOPIAN MONKS BELIEVE D THAT THE ANNUNCIATION OF JESUS CHRIST WAS 7 YEARS BEFORE EUROPEANS (GREGORIAN) STARTRED COUNTING THE YEARS.

The Ethiopian calendar (Amharic: የኢትዮጵያ ዘመን አቆጣጠር yä’Ityoṗṗya zämän aḳoṭaṭär) is the principal calendar used in Ethiopia and also serves as the liturgical calendar for Christians in Eritrea and Ethiopia belonging to the Orthodox Tewahedo churches, Eastern Catholic Church and Lutheran Orthodox Church.

It is a sidereal calendar based on the older Alexandrian or Coptic calendar, which in turn derives from the Egyptian calendar, but like the Julian calendar, it adds a leap day every four years without exception, and begins the year on August 29 or August 30 in the Julian calendar.

Like the Coptic calendar, the Ethiopic or Ge’ez calendar has twelve months of exactly 30 days each plus five or six epagomenal days, which comprise A THIRTEENTH MONTH. The Ethiopian months begin on the same days as those of the Coptic calendar, but their names are in Ge’ez. The sixth epagomenal day is added every four years without exception on August 29 of the Julian calendar, six months before the Julian leap day.

Thus the FIRST DAY OF THE ETHIOPIAN YEAR, 1 MÄSKÄRÄM, for years between 1901 and 2099 (inclusive), IS USUALLY SEPTEMBER 11 (GREGORIAN). It, however, falls on September 12 in years before the Gregorian leap year

Sunday, September 15th: 2nd Annual Gala Gala Hey! (an apple festival)

Help us usher in fall with our favorite celebration of apples, Gala Gala Hey! We’re teaming up with Kate Lebo and The Bored Vegetarian for an apple onslaught: some of our favorite ciders, apple food pairings, bobbing for apples, old-timey music, and 5 varieties of pies from the amazing baker, Lebo (5 kinds!).

She’ll be offering up cheddar-crusted apple pie, whiskey crumble apple pie, honey-ginger apple pie, brandied apple cardamom pie and apple pear pie. Pie slices are all $5 and whole pies are $40. Vegetarians beware! The secret ingredient to Kate’s super-flaky crust is LARD. Stick to Cheddar-Crusted Apple or Apple Pear Pie. They’ll be made with all butter crusts.

On tap we’ll be serving Doc’s Pumpkin Cider and Harpoon Cider. In the bottle, we’ve got Doc’s Hard Cider (New York), Sidra Castanon (Spain), Slyboro Hidden Star Sparkling Cider (New York), Aaron Burr Ginger Carrot Cider (New York), JK Scrumpy Farmhouse Organic Hard Cider (Michegan) and Duche de Longueveille Dry Sparking Non-Alcoholic Cider (France), in regular pours and a few super fun tasting flights.

In additional to apples and fall, we’ll be celebrating the release of Lebo’s new cookbook, A Commonplace Book of Pie,

a quirky collage of fact and fiction that combines humor, art, recipes, pop culture, and poetry to redefine America’s favorite dessert. Pie is a medium for conversation in this debut book from Chin Music Press, balancing Lebo’s technical baker know-how with lyrical ruminations on the real and imagined relationships between pie and those who love it.

Kate’s writing has appeared in Best New Poets, Gastronomica, and Poetry Northwest among other journals, and she’s currently at work on a pie cookbook for Sasquatch Books, forthcoming in 2014. She teaches creative writing at Richard Hugo House and pie making at Pie School, her cliche-busting pastry academy. She also hosts Pie Stand, a social that uses pie to create conversations across communities.

The music of musician/composer j.c.King solo and in various constellations With Long term collaborators; Masha Poloskova_violin, Mollie Fischer_cello, Hannah Liddell_piano, Leah Celest_viola, Corey Walker_brass, multi instrumentalist Andy Hadaway (and many wonderful guests) has been intentionally amorphous, however, remains to celebrate accoustic orchestral instrumentation and musicianship.

With Mr.King’s unique songs, employing improvisation to examine the environments of consistently romantic themes, Hello Lovers are cultivating a zealous and ritual method of torch song. musics of resonant harmony, mystery, stillness and erratic movement.

In 2012 Mr.king relocated to Brooklyn to train, write and experiment with new work.

For me, summer is about the beach, wearing as little clothing as possible and eating crabs, Maryland style. For those in the know, steamed Chesapeake Bay blue crabs, piled high on a table covered in paper and spread with wooden hammers, paper towels and ample cans of cold beer is about the best thing imaginable. For those who don’t know this, I’m here to tell you.

Sunday, June 30th: Ethiopian vegan pop-up dinner with Bunna Cafe

We’re super excited to host Bunna Cafe, a new Ethiopian Vegetarian Restaurant, Coffeehouse, and Music Venue that will be opening in BK later this year. Until then, they are a travelling pop-up cafe hosting dinner parties and collaborative headline events around the city.

Dinner ranges from $10 to $20. Come in groups and get more for less. Menu will be posted shortly, but will likely look similar to the menu you see below. Come by, stretch out, eat some amazing Ethiopian food, drink some sailor punch + a shai correnti or two, and stay for the traditional The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony.

Are you ready to do it again? We’re Medieval carousing again, this year with a healthy dose of Southern Pentecostal flair. We’ve got music all day, from country tunes to blues to gospel; shrimp po’ boys and collard greens to eat; the annual reading of Le Morte d’Arthur; baptism by whiskey; and everyone’s favorite, sword fighting and sword fighting lessons from the NYC Longsword Fencing Club. Who shall we crown the 3rd knight of The Drink in 2013? Sword fighting is a late one this year. Starts at 8 pm!

May the flames of heaven reign down upon our heads, may our tongues be loose and inspired, and may our Pentecostal oath and bond be strengthened for yet another year.

What: Queen’s Day, a Dutch celebration with Denizen Rum

Queen’s Day. A day when the notoriously free Dutch let loose across the country in celebration of their queen, Queen Beatrix. We decided to join forces with one of our favorite white rums, Denizen, and come up with our own Brooklyn-ized version of Queen’s Day.

We’ll have music all day from Juniper Rising and friends, $3 glasses of Denizen Rum punch (including a frothy, light new punch based on the traditional Dutch booze-soaked apricots and raisins and topped with sparkling wine, as well as some old favorites) and Dutch food specials.

Come out in your best orange (the Dutch’s favorite color) and enjoy your Sunday.
